“ Mother” is a song written by the British band Pink Floyd, and it appears for the first time on their album “The Wall” from 1979. Perfectly performed by Roger Water and David Gilmore, The song is pretty calm, begins quietly with solo voice and a single acoustic guitar , and expands its instrumentation to include other instruments, It seems normal, until you listen carefully to the lyrics and read between the lines to discover the story beneath.
The song narrates a conversation by Pink, the main character (voiced by Waters) and his mother (voiced by Gilmour); Pink’s father died in WWII and he was raised by his mother who was very loving but sometimes overbearing and domineering. All people dream of being great and important figures at some time or another, and Pink is no exception, he dreams of great political power , »Mother, should I run for president?« , realizing that power and greatness merely magnify a person’s vulnerability. but growing up through the Cold War Era made Pink very scared and suspicious, « Mother should I trust the government? Mother will they put me in the firing line? » Therefore, Pink starts to wonder if he should build a wall between himself and his feelings towards others, « Mother should I build the wall? »
And there it comes his over-protective mother and places the first bricks in the wall , « Of course mama’s gonna help build the wall. »
Pink growing older and getting some experience, He is telling his mother about a girl. He is worried that she might not be good enough for him, and that she might break his heart. (“Mother, do you think she’s good enough for me?” “Mother, will she break my heart”) He also says “Mother will she tear your little boy apart?”, wondering will she be there with him even so ? She insists that Pink stay by her side even after he grows up, and cannot stand it when Pink eventually grows older and falls in love, and she replies that “you’ll always be baby to me” which means that she’ll keep protecting him forever.
